Structural Engineers Association of San Diego Honors i3 | San Diego

We are pleased to announce that Hope-Amundson’s i3 project is the recipient of the Structural Engineers Association of San Diego 2017 Award for Excellence in Structural Engineering in the category of New Construction. Our office provided structural engineering services for this innovative project located in the University Town Center area. The $78.5 million project consists of three separate three-story laboratory/office ‘Blocks’ totaling 300,000-square-feet situated over a three-level, 310,000-square-foot subterranean parking garage.

Constructed with mild reinforced cast-in-place concrete, i3 features exterior stairs at each building, long cantilevers at the second floor and roof levels, a courtyard with landscaped areas over the subterranean structure, green roofs, and major High Bay transfer beams. With the interior space and glazing pulled back from the edge of the cantilevers, the perception is that the building is extending out hanging over the I-805 freeway.

i3 | San Diego provides an example of both the versatility and practicality of concrete construction in a lab/office. With its abundance of exposed concrete structural elements , including most slabs, beams and columns, paired with challenging construction constraints, i3 is a benchmark for quality of execution and constructability. Hope-Amundson is extremely proud of this project and to receive this award.

BioMed Realty is the owner, Perkins + Will served as the architect, and McCarthy Building Companies was the contractor. i3 will advance to the state level of competition within the Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) later this year.
